Race re-cap show now available – Schimsk Doubles Up At Miller in Race 2 Round 8
Tooele, Utah, Oct. 3 — Dodge Viper ACR-X driver Ryan Schimsk made it two Dodge Viper Cup wins in a row this weekend by running away with Sunday’s race at Miller Motosports Park near Salt Lake City. He also easily won Saturday’s race.
The race was tight for the first few laps as perennial front-runner Ben Keating chased Schimsk, closely followed by Ralph Gilles and Keith Verges. But Keating ran just a bit wide out of Ecstacy, the left-hander leading up to the esses. Gilles jumped on the opportunity and got inside Keating, whose left front wheel chose that exact moment to disintegrate. He went off, but was able to save the car and drive slowly around to the pits for a new wheel and checkup before rejoining.
After that, it looked as if Schimsk had enough breathing room to cruise to the finish in the fourteen-lap race, if the rainstorm brewing in the desert would hold off. Gilles had a comfortable gap on third-place Charlie Putman, who was driving Jeff Courtney’s ACR-X.
With two laps to go the weather turned ugly as the storm blew in violently and the course became rain slick in places, slowing the pace. Putman, though, began to close up on Gilles and was on his bumper as the two crossed the line to begin the last lap. Gilles held him off for half the lap, but Putman went through as the rain intensified.
Shimsk crept through the last lap, taking no chances, and still finished six seconds ahead. Verges was fourth, ahead of Ted Hughes. Jim Stout, Michael Von Quilich, Kurt Sollberger, Connie Bogan and Eric Galerne rounded out the top ten. All drove 2010 Dodge Viper ACR-Xs.
Keating rejoined the race in last place and ran fast, but was unable to improve his position, finishing thirteenth.
