Who’s hot heading to inaugural Barber race?

By Dave Lewandowski

Will Power is a given with consecutive victories to kick off the season, but who else is hot heading into the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by Legacy Credit Union?

Well, there’s Justin Wilson, who – save for a cut tire late in the opener in Brazil – would have a pair of top-five finishes. Then there are Raphael Matos, who’s appeared to have made significant strides with two top 10s, and reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti (followed up a pole start and seventh-place finish in Brazil with a hard charge to fifth at St. Petersburg on March 29).

Tony Kanaan has a couple of top 10s, as does Helio Castroneves.

The 2.38-mile, 17-turn Barber Motorsports Park, though, is the wild card. Most drivers tested for two days at the venue in February to get the lay of the land and a feel for their car. But A.) it was uncharacteristically cold during the test, not providing true data, and B.) it’s a new venue for the drivers.

How will they stack up on race weekend, when qualifying toward the front of the field is exceptionally important because of limited passing zones? Additionally, who will PEAK Fantasy Racing participants select as their drivers for the race? There’s no real history to examine with (other than Power topping the lap chart in testing), so this might be one where it’s go with your favorites on the road/street courses.
