2010 SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series Gets Underway This Weekend in New Jersey

The SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series kicks off its 43rd season of competition this Sunday with the series inaugural visit to New Jersey Motorsports Park and its 14-turn, 2.25-mile Thunderbolt Raceway circuit. The green flag is scheduled to drop on Round 1 of the 10-race championship at 3:10 p.m. EDT on Sunday afternoon.

09-ta-drissi-ra-300x2002009 Trans-Am Champion Tomy Drissi.

The 40-lap race will cap a weekend of racing activity at New Jersey Motorsports Park and will mark the first time 2009 Trans-Am Series champion Tomy Drissi will defend his title in the No. 5 RSR Jaguar. Drissi, who hails from Hollywood, Calif., will be looking for his third Trans-Am race victory on Sunday.

Drissi leads a two-car Jaguar effort from RSR. He is joined on the team by 2009 Trans-Am Series Rookie of the Year Daniel Ramoutarsingh of Trinidad. Ramoutarsingh finished fourth overall in the 2009 championship standings with a pair of podium finishes in the seven-race season. He is looking for his first career Trans-Am victory on Sunday.

Tony Ave, of Maiden, N.C., is ready to resume his battle with Drissi this weekend after finishing second in the 2009 championship. He led the series with five pole positions last year, but is still looking for his first Trans-Am race victory, which he hopes will come on Sunday in the No. 4 Tony Ave Racing/Pro Motor Engines Chevrolet Corvette.

Second-generation racer Simon Gregg, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., is also returning for another season of Trans-Am competition this weekend behind the wheel of the No. 59 Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette. Gregg finished third in the 2009 title chase and recorded the first podium result of his Trans-Am career last year with a third-place run at Mid-Ohio.

After finishing fifth in the 2009 Trans-Am championship as a series rookie, Glen Jung, of Osteen, Fla., is back for a second season. Jung posted a best result of sixth at Portland and earned a total of four top-10 finishes. He is once again driving the No. 77 MAZDASPEED/Goodyear Tires Mazda RX-7 for Rotary Xtreme Team.

Amy Ruman will once again drive the No. 23 McNichols/Goodyear/Cenweld Corp. Chevrolet Corvette for Ruman Racing. Hailing from Kent, Ohio, Ruman is the lone woman in this weekend’s Trans-Am field. Last year, she finished 10th in the championship standings, topped by a third-place run at Road Atlanta. It was her first Trans-Am podium.

Returning to Trans-Am for the first time since 2006 will be Joey Scarallo, of Smithtown, N.Y., in the No. 6 Group A Racing Chevrolet Corvette. Scarallo owns 34 career Trans-Am starts with best results of third at Portland and Cleveland in 2005. He has one Trans-Am pole position, which came at Heartland Park Topeka in 2006.

Scarallo is one of two drivers in this weekend’s field with previous experience at Thunderbolt Raceway, as he competed in SCCA World Challenge races at the track in both 2008 and 2009 with a best result of 10th in the GT class last year. Ave is the other driver in the field to have driven at NJMP. He finished 31st in the ARCA race on Thunderbolt Raceway in 2008.

This weekend’s field will also include a pair of series rookies in Mike Skeen, of Charlotte, N.C., in the Agee Racing No. 81 Baker Manufacturing/Next Tables Chevrolet Corvette and Harold Musler, of Auburn, Pa., in the No. 07 H L Musler Inc. Chevrolet Corvette for Musler Motorsports. Skeen made three Trans-Am starts last year, posting a best result of second and turning the fastest lap in the race in his series debut at Road Atlanta.

Skeen retains rookie status for 2010, as SCCA considers drivers to be rookies if they have made five or fewer starts in a series during their career or three or fewer starts in a given season. Musler is making his Trans-Am debut this weekend.
