Who’s hot heading to Watkins Glen?

After a four-oval interlude, the IZOD IndyCar Series returns to road courses this weekend with the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen.

There have been seven different winners this season, with only Will Power taking the checkered flag more than once (the opener in Brazil followed by St. Petersburg). The Team Penske driver will be among the favorites at the challenging 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International circuit, though he isn’t necessarily hot heading into the race (one top five on the ovals).

The same goes for Dreyer & Reinbold’s Justin Wilson – the ’09 race winner. He has a pair of runner-up finishes at St. Pete and Long Beach, but didn’t pick up much championship points traction on the variety pack of ovals. Wilson has started from the front row at Watkins Glen the past two years.

Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, the winner at Long Beach and second-place finisher at Sao Paulo, brings a streak of two top-10 finishes into the 60-lap race. Teammate Marco Andretti has finished fifth each of the past three years at The Glen.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon is a three-time winner at The Glen and has six top-10 finishes in a row, while teammate Dario Franchitti had three top 5s in a row on the ovals and was in contention for his second victory until a gearbox issue with 50 laps left at Iowa Speedway knocked him to 18th.

Team Penske drivers have started from the pole each of the five races (Helio Castroneves three times and Ryan Briscoe the past two years). Briscoe was runner-up in last year’s race.
