Capaldi Racing Captures Fifth Consecutive Podium; Reclaims Series Points Lead

July 28, 2010 After falling out of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge points lead at Mid-Ohio, Tony Buffomante and Capaldi Racing were eager to earn it back. When they unloaded the car at New Jersey Motorsports Park for the next race, Tony hit the ground running—setting the third and first fastest times in the first two practice sessions of the weekend. Qualifying for the first race was very competitive, with Tony posting the third quickest time – just 0.373 seconds shy of the pole. After falling behind Pratt Cole and Jason von Kluge at the start of the race, Tony reclaimed his third place starting position when Pratt and Jason tangled. Once he passed series veteran Dan Aweida, Tony’s race ended with him taking second, for his fourth consecutive podium finish this season.

During qualifying for the second Mustang Challenge race of the weekend, Tony once again set the third fastest qualifying time. In the race, although he dropped down to fifth, at the start of the second half of the race, Tony passed Pratt Cole, crossing the line in fourth place and recapturing the championship points lead.

“I didn’t exactly get the results we wanted this weekend, but we took the points lead again so I’m happy,” said Tony. “The Capaldi Racing team was again flawless all weekend, and I’m “really proud of and happy for Devin’s results. I’ve known Devin and his Dad for years, and it was great to race alongside him and can’t wait to do it again.”

One highlight of the weekend was 20-year old Devin Cates joining the Capaldi Racing team, and he proved to be a fast addition. After turning in the sixth fastest lap in his second-ever Mustang Challenge practice session; Devin also qualified sixth for the first race. Devin had a strong race, finishing eighth overall, and it was clear that he was getting more comfortable with the #68 Capaldi Racing Mustang FR500S throughout the race. In qualifying for the weekend’s second Mustang Challenge series race, Devin set the fastest lap, earning the pole. When the green flag dropped, Kyle Gimple, who started in second, was able to get by Devin on the first lap, dropping Devin to second where he remained until late in the race when Jason von Kluge passed him. Devin finished his second Mustang Challenge race on the podium in third place.

“I’m extremely pleased with the results,” said Devin. “The top 10 finish on Saturday was a great way to end my first Mustang Challenge race. In Sunday’s qualifying, the car felt great, and as my comfort level increased, my lap times decreased, as shown with earning pole position for Sunday’s race. Even though Kyle got by me at the start, I felt great for most of the race. I started getting hot in the second half, and made a couple mistakes. Jason capitalized on my mistakes and got by me. I’m extremely happy with the third place finish. Congratulations to Kyle and Jason for a great race, and to Tony and Capaldi Racing team for the championship points lead.”

The next Mustang Challenge race is at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Illinois on August 1st. Visit for team updates.
