Mazda ALMS Team One-Two.…Mazda Young Guns Won Two….Mazda Fans Won Too

(Irvine, Calif.) The annual month of motorsports finales started off with a roar in the streets of downtown Baltimore. The Inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix, featuring Indycars, the Mazda Road to Indy, and American Le Mans sports cars was a big hit. A large crowd of enthusiast fans enjoyed three days of great weather and great racing.

Mazda’s Director of Motorsports John Doonan summarized the weekend, “The Baltimore Grand Prix weekend will no doubt rank as a season highlight for many of our Mazda racers. It was likely the largest crowd to watch a USF2000 or Star Mazda race this season. Taking one-two in the ALMS race was fantastic for Mazda as we are chasing manufacturers championships in ALMS, Grand-Am, and the Continental Tire Challenge this year.”

Weekend highlights:

The Dyson Lola-Mazda team extended their lead in the American Le Mans LMP1 championship with their first ever one-two overall finish. Two races remain in the 2011 championship, Mazda Raceway on September 17th and Road Atlanta on October 1st.

Petri Suvanto, an 18-year-old from Finland, clinched the 2011 Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda with a win on Saturday. Series runner-up Spencer Pigot won the Sunday race to conclude the USF2000 season. Suvanto will be awarded a ride in the 2012 Star Mazda Championship.

Tristan Vautier won the Baltimore Star Mazda race on Sunday morning to extend his lead in the championship. The season finale for the 2011 Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear will be in two weeks at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The 2011 Star Mazda champion will be promoted to Indy Lights in 2012 thanks to the Mazda Road to Indy program.

MAZDASPEED Motorsports Ladder Alums featured prominently in both the IZOD Indycar and Firestone Indy Lights races with Simona de Silvestro leading a few laps of the Indycar race and both Conor Daly and Anders Krohn leading in the Lights race.

While Baltimore was the biggest news, Brainerd International Raceway held a doubleheader for the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup. Points leader Mike Cooper dominated the weekend winning both races to clinch the 2011 championship. Cooper will be promoted to a Mazda team in the 2012 Continental Tire Challenge.

Mazda was also recognized this past weekend in Indianapolis for their contribution to the sport by the Lyn St. James Foundation. 1992 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year and legendary female racing driver Lyn St. James awarded Mazda North American Operations her 2011 OPPORTUNITY AWARD. The award is for the impact Mazda has had on the motorsport industry – specifically Mazda support for young drivers from karting to the top levels of sports car and open wheel racing.
