Mendocino Red Tail Rally Results

After a 30-year hiatus, the 2011 Mendocino Red Tail Rally returned to operation August 6th in Northern California. Based in Ukiah, CA and sanctioned by Rally America, the Rally took place on more than 54 miles of hard-packed twisty roads in the South Cow Mountain 0ff-Road Vehicle Park. Fourteen Rally teams arrived at the Mendocino Red Tail Rally excited to celebrate the event’s return as the second to last event in the 2011 Bilstein Southwest Regional Rally Cup.

Alex Rademacher, from Stateline, NV, along with girlfriend and co-driver, Jeani Yi, overcame a multitude of challenges for the 2011 Mendocino Rally overall win in their Subaru 2.5RS Open Light class rally car.

The couple’s challenges began early while on transit to the event when their rally car suddenly veered to the side of the road. Rademacher feared they broke an axle and began making arrangements for replacement parts. Fortunately, fellow competitors Adam Crane and Sean Medcroft, local Pacific Northwest favorites, stopped to assist Rademacher and Yi and pointed out that the problem was not a broken axle, but a lost axle nut. The team quickly found an extra axle nut and were back on the road soon after.

Later in the rally, Rademacher found himself in the lead after two-time Belgian Rally Champion, Derek Sterckx from Los Angeles, CA along with co-driver Karen Jankowski from San Diego, CA, lost their clutch on Stage 5. Prior to this, all eyes were on Sterckx and Jankowski as the favorites to win the event in their Open Class Mitsubishi EVO 6 transported from Europe, however, mechanical misfortune struck the team and they would not finish the rally.

Rademacher then concentrated on fending off a hard-charging Adam Crane to the end.

“(Adam Crane) had an amazing last stage, only 6 seconds off of my time with less horsepower and running on worn tires,” said Rademacher, “I think he drove the last stage better than I did.”

“The return of the Mendocino Red Tail Rally was an amazing experience for Jeani and I,” continued Redemacher, “Great people, amazing roads, good weather. Fun was had by all. The roads practically forced you to link your drifts together!”

Group 2 Class honors went to George Doganis from Orange County, CA and co-driver Tom Smith from Lakewood, CA in a Honda Civic who fiercely traded stage times with Tom and Dick Moser’s Volkswagen Golf. The competition between teams was so evenly paired that they amazingly finished the first stage with the exact same finish time! However, Moser’s rally came to an abrupt end with a broken axle not long after on Stage 6.
