Pro SRF: Spicer Exits Trois-Rivieres with Third Series Win
Richard Spicer took his series-leading third SCCA Pro Spec Racer Dord Series win in race two (Round Six) of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres on Sunday (August 7). Joining the Hagerman RacEngineering driver in the post race celebrations were PM Racing’s Brian Schofield and Jean-Luc Liverato.
Spicer, having started from the pole position and led the early stages of race onr, was again the racer at the head off the field when race two got underway in front of the Quebec race fans. Unlike the opening affair, it was Schofield who got the jump to take the lead heading into the first turn. The two drivers battled back and fourth throughout the race, before Spicer finally took over the point on lap 12 of what was a 17-lap affair.
Shortly thereafter, Carl Harris made heavy contact with the outside wall at turn 10 in the No. 49 Four Seasons Radiator SRF, bringing out a full-course caution and the race was not restarted. As a result, Spicer picked up his third victory of the season after taking one at each of the season’s previous two doubleheaders at Virginia International Raceway and Mosport International Raceway in May.“The mechanical issue (on Friday) was unfortunate,” Spicer said after his Sunday morning victory. “I thought we had a pretty good hold on that race, but stuff like that happens. This was a great, exciting race. I hope the fans loved it. I did my best to get Brian on the start because that outside line down into (turn) one has got a lot of grip on the outside and it puts you on the inside for two. He got by me and I was just biding my time. I waited for a little bobble here and there and I got by him. Then, I think I made a bobble and he got back by me. It was just a great win. I got him coming out of two going into the arch (turn three). I just put my head down. It’s unfortunate it ended under yellow, because I think it would have been a really exciting finish.”
Schofield held on to finish second and moved into the series points lead after three of the season’s five doubleheader weekends. He leads Spicer by 42 points, 711-669. Liverato again finished third, followed by Simon Dion-Viens in fourth. Mark Vultaggio Pa., completed the top five in the No. 81 Dinosaur Racing SRF.
Harris was transported to a local hospital following the race in stable condition with a broken left ankle. He was expected to undergo surgery and will remain at the hospital for observation.
Next up for the 2011 SCCA Pro Racing Spec Racer Ford Series is a doubleheader at Brainerd International Raceway on Labor Day Weekend (September 3-4).
The top-three will be posted following every session on the ESR Facebook page and ESR Twitter page.
The video race coverage of the Mosport doubleheader will be available at http://www.GoRacingTV.com in approximately two weeks time.
