Bill Wood’s – Some Things You Should Know: 11-10-21

Here are some Things You Should Know:

Sebastien Ogier will assist Sebastien Loeb’s challenge for an eighth World Rally Championship crown in Spain but admits he’s frustrated that he can’t fight for the title himself. Ogier is three points behind his Citroen team-mate with two events remaining. However, with the French make publicly stating it will back Loeb’s title bid, Ogier will be forced to take on a supporting role on RallyRACC-Rally de Espana. Despite accepting he will ultimately have to cede position to Loeb in the event he gets in front of his fellow Frenchman, Ogier has vowed to push on the gravel and asphalt stages that make up Friday’s action. He says he’s fighting fit now, but Mikko arrived in Spain with a temperature and a bad cold. Playing ice-hockey with his kids at home possibly wasn’t the ideal way to prepare for the penultimate round of the 2011 WRC. After taking time to swim with dolphins in sunny Australia in September, Ford Abu Dhabi/MICHELIN’s Mikko Hirvonen couldn’t resist the temptation to play a little ice-hockey with his children at home last weekend. The contrast between the heat and the cold didn’t do him the best of good. Soon afterwards, the Finn felt a cold coming on… “It was only a cold, but it felt as though I was at death’s door up until as recently as Tuesday,” he admits. Suitable treatment soon had him on his feet again, but it was hardly the ideal way to prepare for what could be a decisive weekend as he strives to secure his first ever WRC world title. Ken Block has come up with a new way to avoid jetlag, a two-week holiday in Ibiza. The Monster World Rally Team star usually flies back and forth to his home in California in between his world championship appearances in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC and admits his punishing travel schedule can be arduous. However, following Rallye de France Alsace earlier this month he jetted to the Mediterranean island for a short break with his wife and young family rather than heading back to America. “I spent two weeks in Ibiza playing with my kids and it’s amazing,” said Block. “My co-driver Alex Gelsomino was really tired today but I feel perfectly normal. But that’s just the reality coming from where I live. It’s really hard with the schedule I’ve got. It really does take some time to adjust and it’s not just two or three days.” Here’s more:

Monday and Tuesday Ford released it’s Focus ST-R race platform that will be used in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Gunnar Jeannette did the development work in the Birmingham test with other Grand-Am cars. I’m told the car will make it’s debut at the Continental round in Daytona next year. As the all-new Focus ST road car made its global production debut, Ford gave a European welcome at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show to a special motorsport counterpart – the race-tweaked, production-based Ford Focus ST-R. This was last month at the Frankfort Motor Show. It’s purpose-built for the track by Ford Racing in North America as a fully- prepared competition car. It features a powerful 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine, FIA regulation roll cage, uprated brakes and track-tuned suspension. It will be available to teams soon, starting in North America, to race in a variety of series. (Sorry for the music!)

Had the chance to film Rally champion and winner of the Dakar 2011 Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-pilot Giovanni Bernacchini testing the Ford Fiesta S2000 prior to Rally of Lebanon 2011 and during the rally. After leading the 3 days rally, Nasser finally fell under pressure of Lebanese Roger Feghali (Mitsubishi evo X R4) and finished second. Here are some flicks of Nasser’s skillfull performance from the rally and the testing day. Featuring some cool close ups of launch control, with lovely S2000 sounds.

Queensland Sport Minister, Phil Reeves joined with V8 Supercars Chairman, Tony Cochrane and a number of drivers at the Armor All Gold Coast 600 today to unveil a trophy dedicated to the memory of fallen IndyCar star,
Dan Wheldon. The Dan Wheldon Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the winning International driver this weekend. Wheldon – who competed in the only IndyCar event on the Gold Coast in 2008 – was universally loved in world motorsport. He was due to partner good friend James Courtney in the Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore this weekend. V8 Supercars Chairman, Tony Cochrane was another to pay tribute to Wheldon and promised that “the party would continue just as Dan would have wanted.”

A senior National Transitional Council official has said that deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds after being captured near his hometown of Sirte. Muammar Gaddafi came to power in 1969 in a coup at the age of 27 and went on to rule Libya for 42 years with an iron fist. He has left Libya in tatters and despite the vast oil wealth, a vast majority of Libyans still live on about $2 a day and 40 per cent remain unemployed. Gaddafi wanted to be the leader of the Arab world and modeled himself on Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser.
