Spirit of Daytona Racing announces Daytona 24H drivers

Spirit of Daytona Racing Names Third Driver For Daytona
Sports Car Ace Sascha Maassen Joins Team

December 23, 2010 — Daytona Beach, FL: Spirit of Daytona Racing announced today its third driver for the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Three-time American Le Mans Series class champion Sascha Maassen (Germany) will join Antonio Garcia (Spain) and Paul Edwards (USA) in the No. 90 Chevrolet-powered Coyote DP for North America’s prestigious endurance race in Daytona Beach, Florida on January 29-30.

With a diverse sports car background, Maassen has been no stranger to Victory Lane, winning the ALMS GT championship in 2002-2003 and the ALMS LMP2 championship in 2006. His signature race wins include two 24 Hours of Le Mans class wins (2003-2004), five 12 Hours of Sebring class wins (2001-2004, 2010) and five Petite Le Mans class wins (1999-2000, 2002, 2004, 2006).

Maassen’s lone GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series DP win came in 2003 at Circuit Mont-Tremblant in a Porsche Fabcar for Brumos Racing. His best finish in the Rolex 24 At Daytona is fourth (twice).

“I couldn’t be more excited to return to Daytona,” said Maassen. “I always enjoy racing in such a prestigious race and to do it for a local team, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Maassen will team with 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Rolex 24 At Daytona race winner Antonio Garcia and former GRAND-AM Rolex Series GT champion Paul Edwards to give Spirit of Daytona Racing a lineup as deep as any in the Rolex 24 field.

“We really have a great lineup. We already had the speed with Antonio (Garcia) and Paul (Edwards), but now to have three drivers who are fast and also understand that this is a race you have to finish, it’s hard not to be excited.” Spirit of Daytona team owner/manager Troy Flis said. “We were looking for a driver who would be comfortable in the car under any situation whether it be day or night and still turn quick laps. That’s what we’re getting in Sascha.”

“Seat time will be the biggest thing for him, but with his quality of driving and experience, as long as he is happy with the car, anybody of his caliber will be comfortable within ten laps,” Flis added. “It’s not going to be like in the past with us having to get a driver seat time just to learn the racetrack, a guy like Sascha knows what to expect and what we’re expecting from him.”

Spirit of Daytona Racing will return to the track for the Roar Before the Rolex 24, a multiple-day test at Daytona International Speedway on January 7-9 in preparation for the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 29-30.
